Kenny Brooks Soaked In the Heat and Accolades of Victory Lane for Double the Races at Concord Speedway

CONCORD, N.C. (June 23, 2012) – With a 2012 Concord Speedway Track Champion to be crowned only three races away, emotions and excitement ran high tonight at Concord Speedway. Kenny Brooks, of Concord, N.C., improved his narrow points lead by capturing both feature wins in the Wilburn Auto Body Late Model Stock Car division twin feature races.
Sonny Schoffen, of Mint Hill, N.C., Cooper Faassen, of Monroe, N.C., Adam Morgan, of Concord, N.C. and David Miller, of Concord, N.C., also scored victories in tonight’s feature events on Concord Speedway’s Half-Mile Tri-Oval.
Brooks notched his eighth win of the season in the first of Twin 35-Lap feature races in the Wilburn Auto Body Late Model Stock Car division. The race left fans on their feet as the battle for the lead changed hands three times in the first three laps.
Pole sitter, Brooks, chose to start in the outside position allowing Andrew Thomas, of Monroe, N.C., the inside line. Jeff Melton, of Concord, N.C., charged through both Thomas and Brooks to steal the lead with a three-wide pass.
Melton held onto the lead until the caution flag came out for a spin by Justin Parry, of Salisbury, N.C. On the restart, Brooks was able to not only clear the hard pressure on the outside from Bryan Douzat, of Concord, N.C., but he also passed Thomas for second position. Brooks went on to pass Melton for the lead which allowed Thomas and Jerry Miracle, of Indian Trail, N.C., to sneak by putting Melton back to fourth. By halfway, the battles calmed and the field went on to finish Brooks, Thomas, Miracle as the top three.
In the second Twin 35-Lap feature race, Brooks took home another feature win in the Wilburn Auto Body Late Model Stock Car division. Thomas streaked out to an early lead on the field, while Brooks carefully weaved his way to second position by lap three.
Brooks was just beginning to trim down Thomas’ lead as the caution flag came out which closed the gap for Brooks. The race took a turn for the worse for leader, Thomas, as he suffered a broken track bar which sent him hard into the outside, front stretch wall. Brooks went on to take the win with Melton and Jay Payne, of Thomasville, N.C., following behind in second and third, respectively.
Schoffen continued his stretch of dominating wins in the Pepsi Street Stocks division first of Twin 20-Lap feature events. From his pole-winning qualifying lap to the checkered flag, Schoffen controlled the field. For the first half of the race, Faassen, Charles Hutto, of Monroe, N.C., and Todd Bradburry carried on an intense three-way battle for the second position. However, by lap 11, Faassen took control of the runner-up position while Bradburry rounded out the top three for a finish.
However, Schoffen’s winning streak came to a halt as Faassen grabbed his second win of the season in the Pepsi Street Stocks division second 20-Lap feature race. Teammates, Bryan Thomas, of Monroe, N.C., and Faassen, shuffled their way to the front in the first few laps. Faassen made the pass for the lead on Thomas by lap six.
Just as Schoffen began to challenge Thomas for the second position, the caution flags came out for a spin by Ron Flynn, of Harrisburg, N.C. When the field went back green flag racing, Schoffen didn’t have enough laps left to make a pass and he finished third with Faassen and Thomas capturing first and second.
Morgan grabbed his fifth win of the season in the Town and Country Ford Fast and Furious Fours division 25-Lap feature event. Morgan qualified on the pole, but was made to start shot gun on the field per Fast and Furious division rules for winning the last event.
However, Morgan had a strong car and battled through the field to finish second to Eric Harrington, of Kannapolis, N.C., who was disqualified after the race. Morgan was given the win, while Chris Parham, of China Grove, N.C., finished in second and Terry Parham, of Kannapolis, N.C. in third.
Miller took home the win in the Heintz Performance Sportsman division 25-lap feature event, while Matt Drye, of Rockwell, N.C., finished in second and Gary Whitford, of Monroe, N.C., in third.
The Sportsman division is new to Concord Speedway and prides itself on being a “run what you brung” type of division. Concord Speedway encourages competitors and fans to spread the word about this new division to help increase interest and car count. Our next Half-Mile event will be Saturday night, July 14, for Wilburn Auto Body Night at Concord Speedway. The night will feature Twin 35-Lap races for the Wilburn Auto Body Late Model Stock Car division, Twin 20-Lap races for the Pepsi Street Stocks division, 25 Laps for the Town and Country Ford Fast and Furious Fours division, 25 Laps for the Heintz Performance Sportsman division and 25 Laps for the Vintage Sportsman division.
We will also host the first of our kid’s power wheel races. Parents, please call the office to register your child in either the 12-volt battery division or the 6-volt battery division races. Grandstand admission has been newly reduced to just 12 dollars and kids 12 and under are admitted for free at Concord Speedway. Also new for this year, the speedway will be offering a Senior, Teen and Military discount admission of 10 dollars.
