Concord Speedway Ushers In Changes and Excitement at Saturday’s Opening Night

CONCORD, N.C. (March 30, 2012) – After what wasn’t much of an off-season for Concord Speedway, Opening Night comes with high hopes and a sigh of relief. Concord Speedway spent their off-season doing several renovations to not only the racing surface, but to their overall racing program as well.

Among Concord Speedway’s renovations for this season are fresh paint on all buildings, new bathroom facilities and several landscaping projects. They have also switched concession stand food vendors to US Foods and improved their Late Model division by increasing purse amounts and canceling the entry fee to increase car count and fan excitement.

Most recently, Concord Speedway was able to use the 10,000 dollars they were awarded by NASCAR Hometracks through their Capital Improvement Matching Funds Program to diamond-grind the racing surface to make it smoother, seal the cracks in the pavement and fix a hole in the wall to make the speedway safer.

The speedway hopes to showcase these updates to their fans and competitors this Saturday night, March 31 during their season-opener, the Pepsi 100. Opening Night will feature a 100 lap race for the Late Model Stock Car division with 40 laps for the Street Stocks and 25 laps for the Fast and Furious Fours. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. and qualifying begins at 5:45 p.m. with racing action to start at 7:30 p.m. On hand to kick off the 2012 season with their littlest fans will be a face painter and a balloon artist. The speedway will also have a kid’s coin scramble on the frontstretch!

Grandstand admission is just 15 dollars and kids 12 and under are free. Also new for this year, the speedway will be offering a Senior, Teen and Military discount admission of 10 dollars.

Don’t miss the racing excitement at the track where grassroots racing lives, Concord Speedway!

Monroe Drivers Impressed By Concord Speedway’s Efforts For 2012 Season

CONCORD, N.C. (March 28, 2012) – Two members of the Monroe, N.C., community who moonlight as racecar drivers in the Wilburn Auto Body Late Model Stock Car division at Concord Speedway got a sneak-peak at the speedway’s changes while practicing for the upcoming Opening Night on Saturday, March 31.

Andrew Thomas, a resident of Monroe, and Dr. Jerry Miracle of Miracle Dental Center, are among the many drivers who make the short commute from Monroe to race each week at Concord Speedway.

Although both drivers have raced at Concord Speedway in years past, they share the recent excitement over the speedway’s off-season updates and changes to the racing facility that has been in operation since 1982.

“As soon as I came out to test, I could tell there was lots of money and effort put into the track over the off-season,” said Miracle. “There has been a buzz about the speedway for the past few months, and I think the competition will really heat up this year with a lot of big names in racing coming back.”

Concord Speedway used the off-season to diamond-ground their racing surface, revamp their Late Model Stock Car program, change concession stand food vendors, pressure wash their grandstands, install new bathroom facilities and put a fresh coat of paint on nearly every building on the property. These changes have not gone unnoticed by the competitors either.

“It’s not even the same track,” said Thomas. “My family is from Monroe and I consider Concord Speedway my home track. After seeing and hearing about all of the changes and updates for the 2012 season, there is no reason why drivers like myself and race fans in the area shouldn’t support their local track.”

Concord Speedway’s Opening Night on Saturday, March 31 will feature three divisions of racing including Late Model Stock Cars, Street Stocks and Fast & Furious Fours. There will be a face painter and a coin scramble for the kids. The speedway is now offering Senior, Teen and Military discounts and as always, kids 12 and under are free! There is affordable fun for every age at Concord Speedway…where grassroots racing lives!

ATTN: Late Model Stock Car Division Rule Change

After the conclusion of our open practice session along with other data we have obtained, we feel it is necessary to make a change with the GM8604 and the FordD347SR (replacement engine of the Z351SR) crate engines. Going into the Season Opener, we will be allowing these crate engines to run the Holley 650 CFM part#HP80507-1 four-barrel carburetors that are used by many of the other local tracks. The weight will remain at 3,200 pounds total for an overall weight with a right side weight of 1,440 pounds. If a competitor elects to continue to run the 500 HP two-barrel carburetors, the total weight will be 3,100 pounds with a right side weight of 1,400 pounds.

The track will continue to monitor the crate engine program in an effort to maintain equal competition.
